Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk meets with Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby

On 25 September 2013, at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, and Arcbishop Elisey of Sourozh attended the episcopal ordination of Canon Jonathan Goodall which took place in the main Cathedral of Westminster Abbey.

After the ceremony, the guests proceeded to the Lambeth Palace where a solemn reception was given on behalf of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Metropolitan Hilarion conveyed to the Archbishop of Canterbury an invitation to send students and groups of pilgrims to Russia so that they could learn more about the Russian Orthodox spirituality and the life of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Anglican bishops who took part in the meeting spoke about the great importance of the heroic deed of the holy new martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church for the whole Christendom.

It states that the Anglican bishops spoke about this, but unfortunately the press release doesn't tell us what the Russian bishops said on the matter.

At 8.00pm on Tuesday 24th December 2013 we have our "Midnight" Mass in St Simeon's Chapel in the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate in Belgrade.
The invitation to celebrate there has become something of a tradition now, and sometimes we forget how special this is - it is very rare for an Orthodox Church to invite an Anglican community to celebrate the Eucharist in one of its churches or chapels - so don't miss the opportunity to be a part of it!

The Archbishop of Canterbury at the Constantinople 2014

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew: "Your Grace Archbishop Justin, Beloved Brother in Christ, and Honoured Guest of the Ecumenical Throne,

In the year 1837 the English traveller Robert Curzon visited the Ecumenical Patriarch at the Phanar, and was greatly surprised to find that His All-Holiness had never heard of the Archbishop of Canterbury. ‘Archbishop of what?,’ said the Patriarch with some scepticism. ‘Who is he?’

Today, we are happy to affirm, our two Churches are somewhat better acquainted! You come here, dear Archbishop Justin, not as a stranger but as a friend, as a valued colleague and ally whom with all our heart we welcome most warmly. We hope that this will be the first of many visits.

We are much impressed and at the same time deeply grateful that, despite your busy schedule, as you visit the heads of the world-wide Anglican communion during the first year of your archiepiscopate, you have given priority to this present pilgrimage that you are making to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. This underlines special relationship that has existed for many years between our two Churches, the Anglican and the Orthodox..."

Jerusalem Patriarch Theophilos III address to the int commission for ang/orth dialogue

"...The Orthodox and Anglican traditions share a grounding in, and a devotion to, the patristic mind. Over the generations, Anglican patristic scholarship, always of the highest quality, and Orthodox patristic reflection, always a living expression of the Church’s faith, have given us eloquent testimony to the ongoing relevance of the patristic heritage to our present life. This common ground that Orthodox and Anglicans share is a great gift to us, and one that has the power to deepen further our joint theological exploration..."

Metropolitan Hilarion meets with Chaplain to St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Moscow

On 24 December 2014, Metropolitan Hilarion received the Revd. Clive Fairclough, Chaplain to St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Moscow, appointed by Archbishop Justin Welby last August.

Discussed were relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Church of England. Metropolitan Hilarion wished his guest success in his new ministry and noted that he was appointed to Moscow at a difficult time for the dialogue between the two Churches due to the recent resolution of the General Synod of the Church of England to allow women to become bishops.
