I usually see Jesus as a father who punishes me in good foresight and helps me do his will, so that I may be happy as a side-effect. Not me looking for happiness as a goal, it is me trying to serve Jesus. This is just a poetic message, I am really struggling to be Jesus' friend.
I see Him as my Shepherd, my ever-present Helper and my faithful Advocate. I am at rest and at peace in Him. He gently leads me along the path of righteousness to the glory of His name (Ps. 23). The Lord far more greatly blesses me than chastises me. He is my Provider. I can rely on Him.
Again, I am closer to Rexlion's view. Jesus is my friend and love, he is my strength and my hope. I don't focus on chastisement. I focus on mercy for my failings.
