Motion 14. Raising the Age of Criminal Responsibility

    That this Synod, noting the Resolution of the General Synod of Australia:
    • 1. supports raising the age of Criminal Responsibility from 10 to 14 years;
    • 2. asks the General Manager to convey this resolution and support for it to the Federal Attorney-General, The Attorney-General of Queensland and the Meeting of Attorneys-General.

    We raised the age for confirmation in general from 12y to later in teens many years ago recognising that 12 year olds were not up to the responsibility for making adult decisions. Young people generally do not seem to have grown more responsible in that time and are in fact dependent for much longer. I think this is a sensible move.
