I see this as counter-productive for a forum.

I think members should be EN-couraged to write and not DIS-couraged.

Old threads need not be bad threads.

And my poll was a completely new thread - as a poll.

I would say the issue with the resurrected thread was that it was resurrected to take it off-topic. The thread in question was about body piercings on priests. You replied to a comment from 5 years ago about women's ordination. I imagine if you had reignited a discussion about piercings there would have been no issue.

I saw no issue with your new thread, but I think the problem the mods saw was that there had been 4 recent topics made on the same issue, 2 of which are still active, and the issue in specific has been addressed many, many times before. I understand what you're saying about a poll, but I think the mods didn't see it adding anything unique that couldn't be addressed in one of the two active threads. If you'll note all the women's ordination threads tend to discuss some new angle to the issue previous threads haven't dealt with, and your thread didn't do that.

Sometimes it is a matter of resurrecting a 5-year old thread. It has been common practice on forums for the last 20+ years to discourage the resurrecting of old threads. Some forum software will just automatically close a thread if nothing new was posted in 12-24 months. We don’t have that unfortunately so it needs to be done manually.

Sometimes it has to do with 4-5 threads around the same issue; any new thread would be closed to encourage the existing threads to be used. Again a mundane part of forum culture for the last 20+ years that I have been around.

Please consider the situation of a newcomer.
    For him everything is new!

But if he writes in an old thread, then it gets closed.

And if he opens a new one, it is closed as well - because the topic has been talked of already.

Please think of the sitiation of a newcomer!
Think of the times, when you yourself have been a newcomer.

Again I would like to repeat that my thrad was the only poll on that topic!

    Was that overseen?
    Did that count for nothing?
