Well to be honest, when I used to be Roman Catholics this is how I thought: Protestant speaking: "Because this of that PAPIST" [Here I stopped reading]. Now you may be offended or not ; but that's how it really went.
By the way, all Anglicans are Protestants. If you have doubts about this, just ask your local Popish priest.
Oh, well... I'll just revert to some of my other titles for Romanists, such as "WST"s, or "KEE"s, or whatever else. I post at the pleasure of the forum Rules.
Well, I have a hard time seeing what's wrong with "Orthies", or why I should be offended at "Protties". These are just common-place names. I agree that while sometimes common in Protestant circles, "Papist" has more often than not been used to rile up Roman Catholics and get their blood boiling, so it's probably not something constructive (while valid). Btw, I've been fairly severely treated at CAF, and I know many people who have as well.
Adam said "no other forums" allow for strong language, and yet here was a good counter-example of the biggest religious forum on the internet. I kind of like the fact that we can call a spade a spade here.
OK, I see your point. However, just been browsing that er... CAF place and I hope we never become... that
Speak for yourself good friend. I am not a Protestant and that term is not one that has been used technically, or in a theological way in my Church in over two thousand years. However, I use the term Papist to describe my Roman Friends! They were not pleasant about it and several times asked me to stop which I did whilst they stopped using the offensive P. word But when they resumed I restarted and they banned me!
If the term Papist is banned, I'll go along with that decision, but I think it is an error. For many years in the past reference to the papacy was a common term amongst the Romanist, It was only when someone worked out that the term actually went against papal Aspirations, the call went out to drop it . This was because Anglican Authors pointed out that Rome was a sect and that a sect was a religious organisation that had seceded from the parent body on a single principle! I.e. in this case the papacy and from the Catholic Church at Trent!!
Bravo. The ancient Christians had to invent what would become the Sidesman (Usher) because of Arian-Catholic hostility. The verger's staff is a remnant of the clubs they used in order to keep zealous Catholics from rioting and attacking the heretical Arians. There was no "let's be charitable" mindset for anyone there, when the faith was at stake. Ambrose uses the most sarcastic language to describe the heretics, and Athanasius spares no one.
