Some of you may know I have a dear friend who is an Anglican Benedictine in Western Canada. He shares many quotes and I hope maybe they can be of some inspiration to some of you.

We’d like to be more compassionate. We just aren’t quite sure how. How do we become more compassionate? Looking. Seeing the man on the cross. Taking in the suffering of the one on the cross. Looking. Seeing. Taking it in. That’s the point of conversion. Because most of us don’t want to look or see or take it in. We have a filter that screens out the suffering of others.

Long before there was an institutional structure called “Christianity,” long before there was Canon of Scripture, long before there was any systematic understanding of church order and authority, there was simply and profoundly the experience of Jesus.

I have met adults whose happiness depends heavily on their salary level, the opportunities they are getting, the treatment they are receiving from their boss or co-workers, whether they receive the job or promotion they want, or on similar factors. But the truth is that when we build our lives on these things, we are doomed to a never-ending struggle that will always fail us in the end.

I believe Jesus is giving us a double message. Respond to God as little children dependent on the care and protection of a parent. But also recapture the sense of wonder children have in matters of spirituality.

By focusing on the cross and its place in our lives (rather than its place in Jesus’ life), we are reminded in stark relief that an integral part of the life to which Jesus calls us includes disappointment and defeat and suffering and death. This does not immediately sound like good news, I’ll admit, but it is the truth.

Those experiences in life where we witness a greatness – something in someone else or in ourselves that is clearly beyond one’s own making – or when we face those experiences in life where we feel so small and our need is so great, I think these experiences in life put us in our place: creature in the presence of the Creator.

We must learn patience in the spiritual combat. We must learn to judge no
one, not even ourselves. We must learn to keep on walking, even as we seem
    to go nowhere.

Among God’s creation – among human beings, birds of the sky, fish of the sea, trees and flowers, and waterways, and the very air we breathe – we have the God-given freedom and power to do a great deal in this world, for good or ill.

Some serious food for thought ... the church might want to sit up and take notice!

Everyone is a child of God. Even the people we may find to be poor, even someone whom we may find to be pathetic, or presumptuous, or misguided, or disgusting, even those who reject us, even these people have a place at the table as children of God.

You might want to take a tour through your home and intentionally acknowledge your stewardship of the material things to which you’ve been entrusted. That you belong to God, and these things belong to God, and that when God is ready to redistribute these things, you stand ready, not reluctant, but ready, by God’s grace, to give it up.
