The “gateway to heaven” part is purely a poetic reference to the Incarnation.

Another good example of aberrant devotion.

I was RCC and yet I can't even imagine how I would begin to explain this kind of devotion. It places her on a par with Jesus, as if he alone were not enough. It even states that his triumph would be incomplete without her. So we would have an incomplete incarnation of God. Rationalization is a strange thing that it allows people to believe contradictory things.

From the excellent post by an online account named "cursed papist nonsense":

Bonaventure: "What if I replaced Jesus and God with Mary in our prayers, how bad could it be"

Surely that might be the gateway from heaven for someone but not the gateway to heaven for Him or any of the rest of us.

Many of the Fathers would not have recognized a distinction between the “to” and the “from”. By being the means whereby the Son entered humanity, she made possible the union of humanity with the Son. If one pushes this metaphor too far, one get Mariolatry. But allowing for devotional and liturgical expression of such metaphors does a marvelous job of safeguarding against Nestorianism.

He said John 14:4-5. That is the only way to heaven, church fathers or no church fathers.

What do others think about the Pope's plans to consecrate Russia and Ukraine to Mary? This is supposed to happen at the end of March. Does anyone even know what it means/implies?

Many of the radtrad RCs seem to be hyperventilating that “this is it,” the prophecied event that will bring on something like the Parousia, the salvation of the world except by Mary, y’know the Queen of Heaven

If Mary really were able, she should grab both Putin and Zelensky by their ears and haul them out behind the woodshed for a paddling.

No idea what Francis' actions imply (if anything), however.

I don’t think the original intent of those metaphors was to deny the sufficiency of Christ.

I agree about the original intention, but I think things have gotten a bit out of hand these days, with Mary worship really becoming a strong thing in the RCC. I used to love the Rosary as a devotion (I like mindless repetition for meditation) but the Marian practices just kept increasing and then I started to feel uncomfortable. But then I feel that way about praying to her or any of the saints most of the time, because I would prefer to just pray directly to Jesus. Maybe Marianism is something that some people need who need some kind of a mother figure to relate to? My own mother was so wonderful that I never felt the need for any kind of a 'spiritual mother'. But not everyone has been that fortunate.
