The 1979 BCP is not a valid BCP.

Peter Toon wrote extensively on the subject. Here is an article that appeared in Virtue Online. It has links to other articles. LINK . Toon is actually fairly moderate on the issue. He addresses only some of the problems with the '79.

Yeah, like the weird idea that we should keep a bit of bread in a locked box so everyone knows which creature to bend the knee towards. :(

The 1979 isn't a definitional B."C."P., since it's hardly "common" in the strict sense. There are so many variations in the double-rites that it's like a mish-mash of suggestions rather than one Common order of serving God. Perhaps that's just grammatical, though...

So when someone asks if we reserve the Sacrament or not, we give examples from the BCP and from our own experiences. The response? "That BCP is invalid and those priests have violated their vows." You guys CANNOT be serious.

Of course, the 1979 has no authority outside of the US. The 1662 BCP is the international standard and an historic formulary. Seriously?

A man does not have to be ordained out of a BCP to be validly ordained. The Eucharist doesn't have to be celebrated using a BCP to be validly consecrated. I think H. Barton's point is that the BCP1979 is more a collection of various prayers than a proper BCP. Semantics? :p

Do you have anything more substantive than personal experience and ad hominem?

So what? An American asked if we do this, and yes we do it. References were provided.

Yes. But in addition to not containing the framework of our traditional 'common prayer', the collection of prayers does not contain the theology of the 1662 BCP. Without comparable formularies, we cannot be said to have the same religion as our forebears. How many "Anglicanisms" are there?

Nice try. He said "invalid," which has a very specific meaning.

I really wish people here would think about the ramifications of their words before they post. This BCP was my first introduction to Anglican worship. It is what I use for daily devotions. When people start arrogantly throwing around ideas like "invalid" or "1662 only," all they manage to do is alienate people.

The same could be said of you, Adam. Think about what you say.

The early Church used to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in their homes and at the tombs of the martyrs.
